Frequently Asked Questions

..About Our Free Hosting/Design for Anti-Poverty Non-Profit Organizations

1. WHERE will our website be physically located?
 - On our web server in Seattle Center, in downtown Seattle Washington. Our server uses Microsoft's Windows 2003 Server OS and the websites use Microsoft's latest Asp.Net v3.5 framework.
2. What about our organization DOMAIN NAME?
 - If you already have a domain name, we'll help you switch it to our server in Seattle
3. HOW LONG does it take to get the site up and running?
  - Once we accept your project, we can have the site ready for you to edit within a week.  The rest is up to you and how much time you spend on it. A recent new non-profit site was up and running within 3 weeks, despite some advanced customization.
4. How will I know how to add or make CHANGES?
 - There will be a help manual on your site you can refer to anytime, as well as emailing us for help.  You start by choosing a ready-made site template from a number of alternatives and then adapt it to your needs.  If you need help adapting something not easiily done with your site editor, we'll try and help (such as customizing the site banner, changing site colors or placing your logo at the top). For security reasons, your only access to edit your site is by logging in and using the site editor, not by using ftp or other upload mechanisms.
5. How do we handle accepting DONATIONS on our site?
 - You will need a Paypal or similar account.  Once you have a PayPal account, we can help you get a "Donate" button on your site that sends visitors to your PayPal page to make a secure donation.
6. How often is the SoftwareRunners server DOWN or OFFLINE?
 - In the past several years it has been up 99.5% of the time.
7. What happens if we want to MOVE our site later?
 - No problem.  We can send you your entire site in a "zip" file via email to place on your new server (in order to run the site without changing any files, your new web host's server will need to have Microsoft's Asp.Net framework v3.5)..  We use an extended version of the excellent "My Personal Web Pages Kit" for the free sites, available to the public at http://www.codeplex.com/MyWebPagesStarterKit ..
8. How SECURE is the site?
 - You add, remove and manage the users allowed to edit the site and/or view private pages; for example you can allow certain users, such as board members, to login and view pages marked "private" that are hidden from regular web visitors.
9. What about our EMAIL used by visitors to contact us?
 - If you don't already have an email, we can set you up with one to receive contact requests from site visitors.
 10. WHY are you offering this free service?
  - We are Christians (non-denominational) so we want to help those that are helping people in need as much as we can.  As programmers, this seemed the best way to volunteer our free time.
